This comprehensive review delves into the forefront of research on the human oral microbiome, exploring recent advancements that span microbial colonization, state-of-the-art detection methodologies, and the complex interplay involved in disease progression. Through an exhaustive analysis of the contemporary literature, we illuminate the dynamic orchestration of microbial communities within the oral cavity, underscoring their pivotal role in health and disease. Cutting-edge detection techniques, including metagenomics and high-throughput sequencing, are discussed regarding their transformative impact on understanding the intricacies of oral microbial ecosystems. Aim: To evaluate and compare the magnesium levels in serum and saliva of individuals with tobacco habits with and without potentially malignant disorders (PMDs). Materials and Methods: A total number of 60 patients were taken in the study, which included group A: 20 healthy patients without any tobacco or alcohol habits, without any PMDs, and without any systemic diseases; group B: 20 patients with tobacco habits and without PMDs; and group C: 20 patients with tobacco habits and with PMDs. The serum and salivary samples were collected from the patients and were subjected to magnesium level estimation using the calmagite method. Statistical analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk W test and Mann-Whitney test. Results: The mean salivary magnesium levels were increased in group B (1.442 mg/dl), followed by group C (0.551 mg/dl), and then group A (0.463 mg/dl). The mean serum magnesium levels were increased in group B (1.891 mg/dl), followed by group C (1.608 mg/dl), and then group A (1.589 mg/dl). The salivary and serum magnesium levels were significantly high in patients with tobacco habits and without PMDs compared to the control group. The salivary and serum magnesium levels were significantly decreased in patients with tobacco habits with PMDs compared to the patients with tobacco habits and without PMDs. Conclusion: The study established a significant correlation between the salivary and serum magnesium levels in patients with tobacco habits, with or without PMDs, and showed that as the disease progressed, the salivary and serum magnesium levels decreased.

These innovations have ushered in a transformative era in dentistry, impacting every facet of the field. They encompass activities ranging from the diagnosis and exploration of oral health conditions to the formulation of treatment plans, execution of surgical procedures, fabrication of prosthetics, and even assistance in patient distraction, prognosis, and disease prevention. Despite the significant strides already taken, the relentless pursuit of new horizons fueled by human curiosity remains unabated. The future landscape of dentistry holds the promise of sweeping changes, notably characterized by enhanced accessibility to dental care and reduced treatment durations. In this comprehensive review article, we delve into the pivotal roles played by AI, VR, augmented reality, mixed reality, and extended reality within the realm of dentistry, with a particular emphasis on their applications in oral medicine, oral radiology, oral surgery, and oral pathology. These technologies represent just a fraction of the technological arsenal currently harnessed in the field of dentistry. A thorough comprehension of their advantages and limitations is imperative for informed decision-making in their utilization.

Background: Red ginseng is an herb with many medicinal properties and aids as a mouth rinse with fewer side effects than chlorhexidine. Aim: The study aimed to compare the efficacy of red ginseng herbal mouth rinses with those of chlorhexidine and saline in oral cancer patients. Materials and Methods: The present pilot study was a double-blinded randomized control trial with 45 histopathologically diagnosed oral squamous cell carcinoma patients divided into three groups: two intervention groups (herbal and chlorhexidine mouth rinse) and one control group (saline). Saliva samples for each patient were collected at baseline and after 14 days of using the mouth rinses. A microbiological examination of salivary samples was done by analysing total oral bacterial load along with specific counts for Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum at baseline and after the usage of mouth rinse. Statistical Analysis: The data normality was analysed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, and following the normal distribution of data, parametric tests were employed. Paired t-test and one-way analysis of variance, followed by post hoc Bonferroni test, were used for inter-group and intra-group differences. Result: There was a significant mean difference in total colony count, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Porphyromonas gingivalis with oral hygiene index and gingival index improvement in the red ginseng herbal mouth rinse group when compared to the chlorhexidine and saline groups. Conclusion: In this study, red ginseng mouth rinse exhibited an increased antibacterial effect compared to chlorhexidine and saline. Hence, red ginseng mouth rinse can be used in oral cancer patients to maintain oral health, thereby improving the prognosis of these patients.
